HBA completed an exterior condition assessment of Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. Our visual assessment was completed on foot, using a lift, and by sUAS. NDE consultants used thermal photography and GPR to assess moisture retention in masonry elements and inaccessible construction details, such as historic steel framing. The results of visual and NDE assessment were prioritized and compiled into a 110-page report, including prioritized phasing for future intervention. Our team discovered several serious conditions requiring immediate attention. HBA designed and coordinated emergency interventions such as the removal of the collapsing east balcony and preventing public access below unsafe masonry conditions. We designed interventions to minimize costs and potential future damage or deterioration, and to ensure the safety of the public around the site. Additionally, we collected mortar samples for analysis and replication in our in-house conservation laboratory.
