History
The property on which Greenwood Gardens is located was first developed as a private estate in 1906 by Joseph P. Day. After the house was destroyed by fire in 1911, Day retained architect William Whetten Renwick to design a new house and gardens. The estate featured a 28-room Italianate mansion with expansive gardens included magnificent stepped terraces, water cascades, grottos, arbors, and pools. Details included colorful tiles from the famous Rookwood Company. The house was replaced in 1950, but the gardens and their related architectural features were retained. The 28 acres include formal gardens, open meadows, woodlands, and pasture.
